Zedekiah 2 Chron. 36:11-12 ___________________________________________

Some people excuse their behavior because that is just the way my family is. Athaliah had a wicked grandfather, father, and husband. The Bible does not say who her mother was, but her father Ahab was married to Jezebel. He may have had other wives as well. We don t know, but Athaliah if Jezebel wasn t her mother she probably would have been her around and influenced by her. Having a bad family background does not guarantee that one will be bad. An alcoholic father may have two sons. One becomes an alcoholic saying, This is what I saw my father doing. The other may never touch a drop of alcohol because he says, I saw what alcohol did to my father.

There is an interesting contrast between Athaliah and Jehosheba (Jehoshabeath). 2 Chron. 22:11 tells us Jehosheba was the daughter of King Jehoram, the sister of Ahaziah and the wife of Jehoiada the priest. It does not tell us whether Athaliah was her mother or not. We know her father and brother did not follow the Lord, but she saved her nephew Joash from Athaliah. She chose to follow the Lord. We all must make a choice no matter how we were raised.

Athaliah s grandson did what was right while Jehoiada the priest that raised him was alive, but then he listened to the leaders of Judah and ended up killing Jehoiada s son.

The following generations of the kings of Judah had some kings who did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and some who didn t. Some had godly fathers, and some didn t. Each had to make the choice of how he would live. What is your choice?
